American Studies

American studies is the very definition of a multidisciplinary course, giving you the chance to study a hit of literature, a bit of history and a bit of politics, with film and cultural studies and, possibly, some travel thrown in. In many ways and in many places, American studies is the archetypal modular degree course.

Psychology

Say you do psychology; and people get a bit twitchy, worrying that you're going to psychoanalyse them and reveal the hidden horrors of their sick, dirty, twisted minds. Sadly, it's not quite like that. These days, you're less likely to dabble with Freud than with the everyday workings of the human mind, both normal and abnormal, calculating why people think as they do. You're l...

English - Choosing a Course

There can be huge differences between the various choices of department on your UCAS form, if you're not careful. So look carefully at the prospectus for each of your selections. What you learn and how you learn it can be vastly different things in each institution, so think carefully.

The Cost

If money is going to be a factor in your choice, then there's one very basic rule to follow when working out how expensive going to a university will be. North = cheap. South = expensive. This is particularly true of rent, the biggest cost to students: 10 out of 10 of the most costly institutions to live in are the self-catering halls in London.

Studying Abroad

Given the enthusiasm with which the British have bought up cheap flights to Europe or even just booze cruises, you might imagine that the prospect of spending three to 12 months studying at a European university and a grant of around a 1,000 euros would appeal. But no, surprisingly few students ever take up the opportunity offered by schemes such as the UK Socrates-Erasmus Co...

Tourism & Leisure Management

Much like hospitality and catering, tourism and leisure management is a relatively new course to British universities. It is more likely to be found in former polytechnics and further education colleges than in the more traditional universities (there is a snobbery factor), but as the industry grows, so it demands increased professionalism, and with that comes a need for graduates.

Geography & Environmental Sciences - Environmental Sciences

It helps if you're a bit of an optimist if you want to do environmental sciences. Everyone tells you that the world is going to hell in a deep-fried handbasket, as global warming, the hole in the ozone layer, GM foods and pollution take an increasingly fevered hold in the public imagination and the end of the world gets more and more nigh. Environmental scientists are generally the ones who think they can do something about it, saving us from ourselves, and taking a degree can be step one in that process.

Pharmacology & Pharmacy - Pharmacy

Pharmacy is seeing a healthy rise in applicants, partly because the unemployment levels for the industry are very low, but also because the perception of the role of the pharmacist is changing. Whether it be in a community or hospital setting, the government is increasingly acknowledging that pharmacy is one of the primary health professions in the NHS, and that pharmacists are an integral part of most people's experience of NHS care.

Whether it's why leaves turn red in autumn, why diamonds are hard or even why soap gets us clean, then you won't find a better way to explain it than through the study of chemistry.

There's an urban myth that engineering is all about oily rags and spanners and people tinkering in sheds. Weird, because most engineers work at the forefront of design technology and they never see a spanner. Today's engineers are likely to be designing more efficient car engines, more productive wind turbines, finding ways to increase computer processing speed or decreasing flood damage along Britain's waterways than standing by a sink looking for the Swarfega - the Royal Academy of Engineering has estimated that up to 2 million people in the UK could he classified as engineers in some form or another.

The Campus

Most utopias never actually get built (and when they are, they're mocked; take Milton Keynes, or Disneyland, or even, if you really must, Michael Jackson's Neverland). But there are a number of places in Britain where architects were given a pretty astonishing brief. They were asked to design, from scratch, a little town where a few thousand young, intelligent, occasionally physically active individuals could study and play at the state's expense, where mathematicians would exchange ideas with linguists; biologists would cross-fertilise with art historians.

English

English is always a popular field of study because most of us start with the essential tool hardwired into us. English, that is. We speak it like natives. That's part of the reason, you may find your engineering or scientific friends looking down at you. They can read too (mostly) - and the idea that you spend your weeks immersed in novels is a seductive one.

Studying Away from Home

Living in small university towns can give a feeling of community, and every-thing is easy to reach. In such places, the university is often a dominant force locally (which can breed that town versus gown resentment), but everything may feel a little small-scale - the local cinema is still playing Die Hard 2 and the last band to play a gig there was Level 42.

Social Policy - Choosing a Course

As with all multidisciplinary courses, check the health of the related departments. You'll often he taught by, and use the facilities of, the departments which feed into your course. While it's not a hard and fast rule, it is a generally promising sign if those departments (in this case, those in the social sciences faculty) are in good nick and don't view your course as an extra chore for their teaching staff The only way to really get a feel for that is by asking the right questions at the open day.
